Stephanie Kyuyoung Lee is the founder of the Office of Human Resources, a critical design studio exploring the intersections of spatial, racial and material politics as a liberatory practice. Her current project traces a comparative genealogy of radical ruralism — from early abolitionist communes to contemporary social justice-oriented farms across the U.S. Previously, she worked with Shigeru Ban Architects, OPEN Architecture and Carlo Ratti Associati, and has led exhibition design and fabrication for the artist Lee Bul.

Lee’s teaching and research engage utopian agrarian movements, botanical histories, and rural commons as frameworks for design inquiry. Before joining CMU, Lee was the inaugural Architecture Fellow at Bard College and Strauch Early Career Fellow at Cornell University. Her work has been supported by grants and residencies from the Mellon Foundation, New York State Council of the Arts, The Architectural League, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Arts Center Residency, and the Architecture Residency at Art Omi. Her work was exhibited at the Bibliowicz Gallery (Ithaca), Haus der Architektur (Graz), and citygroup (NYC).

Lee holds a Master of Architecture from Rice University and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Studio Art from Wesleyan University.

We may learn to develop architecture that enriches the context from which it arises by conceptually recognizing the built/natural environment as a complex web of interacting parts constantly exchanging energy and resources.
