Helen & Henry Posner, Jr. Dean of the University Libraries Keith Webster invites you to An Evening with the Architecture Archives, a VIP event to celebrate and connect the Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburgh communities with the Architecture Archives, as well as celebrate the opening of the University Libraries’ exhibition: Here to Stay: Celebrating 40 Years at the Architecture Archives 1984-2024.

The event will include a brief speaking program, bracketed by opportunities for guests to mingle and view items from the Architecture Archives and the exhibition while enjoying hors d'oeuvres and beverages on the fourth floor of Hunt Library.


Event attire is business casual.
 


SPEAKERS

Martin Aurand, Principal Librarian Emeritus at CMU Libraries, served as archivist for the Architecture Archives from 1986–2020. He received his M.A. in American Studies and Historic Preservation at George Washington University, and a Master of Library Science degree at the University of Pittsburgh.  He is a past president of the Association of Architecture School Librarians.

Aurand is a close observer of Pittsburgh’s urban fabric. He is the author of two books: “The Spectator and the Topographical City,” and “The Progressive Architecture of Frederick G. Scheibler, Jr.”; a research guide: “Pittsburgh Architecture: A Guide to Research”; and a number of articles on Pittsburgh architects and architecture.

Gerard Damiani is an Associate Professor at Carnegie Mellon Architecture. He is the founder and president of studio d'ARC architects (SDA) in Pittsburgh. A graduate of Syracuse University, he received his Bachelor of Architecture degree with honors and was awarded the James Britton Medal for best senior thesis. Damiani is an NCARB certified, registered architect with professional licenses in New York and Pennsylvania and has been in practice since 1990, and as principal of his own firm since 1996.

Since 1999 Damiani’s work has received many local awards from the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as well as Pittsburgh Magazine's Superior Interiors and Home of the Year awards program. He has also received national recognition from the National AIA and AIA Pennsylvania for his Live/Work Studio II. His residential work has been featured in U.S. and international architectural publications, including Dwell, GreenSource Magazine, Azure Magazine, Architectural Review, C3, Elle Decoration and A Vivre.

Lynn Kawaratani is the Arts and Humanities Librarian at CMU Libraries, where she liaises with the School of Architecture and manages the Architecture Archives. She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley where she received her Bachelor of Art in architecture and a Master of Architecture. She earned a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to her work in academic institutions, she served as Chief of Design and Editing at Smithsonian Exhibits.
