Carnegie Mellon Architecture will announce the call for applications for the next award cycle in the fall of 2025.
Mission

This scholarship was established in 1951 in memory of Stewart L. Brown, an architect who practiced in Western Pennsylvania. While serving as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army, Brown was killed in action on October 9, 1945. He was the only member of the AIA Pittsburgh chapter to make the ultimate sacrifice serving in World War II.
The AIA Pittsburgh chapter leadership has the honor of jurying this award each year. The scholarship recognizes professional promise in terms of attitudes and scholastic achievement. It is awarded to a student in the fourth year of the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program who is interested in pursuing professional practice in architecture after graduation.
Evaluation Criteria
To be considered for the Stewart L. Brown Memorial Scholarship, applicants must submit a complete application that includes the following information:
- A statement (200 words maximum) that articulates their interest in professional practice
- An anonymous résumé without their name and contact information
- An anonymous 11"x17" landscape format design portfolio (<20 MB, 25 pages maximum) that includes a table of contents and the following items: 1) the professional practice statement, 2) résumé and 3) design portfolio
Note: Applicants should only show work examples that they directly contributed to. Applicants may include collaborative projects but must state which projects were done in collaboration with others. For each collaborative project, the applicant must indicate the number of all authors and which aspect(s) of the project they worked on. Do not list the names of collaborators, as sometimes they too have applied for the award, and this compromises their anonymity.
A jury convened by Pittsburgh AIA chapter leadership reviews the applications and selects up to four (4) students for interviews. The interviews facilitate the determination of professional promise and ultimate selection of the awardee(s).
Spring 2025 Jury: Pittsburgh AIA Chapter leadership: Bob Shelton (President), Sean Sheffler (Immediate Past President), Rebecca Schwartz (First Vice President)
Spring 2025 Award Amount: $4,000 (first place) and $3,000 (runner-up) each (multiple awards available up to $13,000 per year)
