Thesis/Dissertation Submission Procedure

Carnegie Mellon Architecture master's and doctoral (Ph.D.) students must complete the process outlined below to submit their final thesis or dissertation; this is a requirement for students to be certified to graduate from their degree program.

When to Submit
You are eligible to submit your thesis/dissertation only once you have received approval from your track chair and/or advisor and your signature page has been signed by all committee members.
Prepare to Submit Your Thesis/Dissertation
Before you begin your submission, collect the following:
- A single PDF file of the final version of your thesis/dissertation. View recommendations about how to prepare your document.
- Abstract
- Advisor and other committee members' names
- A list of one to three Subject Categories that best describe your thesis/dissertation subject area.
- Optional: supplementary files (audio, video, data, spreadsheets, etc.) that are an integral part of your thesis/dissertation but not part of the full text.
You do not have to complete the submission in one session. You can save your progress and return to finish your submission later; no information will be lost.
Submit Your Thesis/Dissertation
Follow these instructions to submit your thesis/dissertation to CMU Libraries via ProQuest. The submission process will take about 30 minutes to complete.
The ProQuest website uses the term ETD to refer to the electronic (PDF) copy of your thesis or dissertation.
- Go to the submission portal. Review the information on this page. Click "Continue" to begin your submission.
- On the Publishing Options page, click "Select Traditional." Review the information on this page, including information about the ProQuest Embargo, ProQuest Research Assistant, and Search Engine Discovery. Click "Save & Continue."
- Review the ProQuest Agreement. Click "Accept."
- On the Institutional Repository (IR) Publishing Options page, click "Yes" or "No" to indicate if you want your work to be made available immediately. Click "Save & Continue."
- Review the University Agreement. Check the box to indicate that you have read, understand, and agree to the agreement. Click "Save & Continue."
- Review the available Creative Commons License options. Select one. Click "Save & Continue."
- Enter your contact information and mailing address. Optional: Check the box near the bottom of the page if you would like to receive information about ordering additional copies of your thesis/dissertation and other related services. Click "Continue."
- Your Institutional Student ID is your AndrewID.
- An ORCID ID is optional but recommended. Visit the ORCID website to learn more, create an ID, or look up an existing ID.
- The mailing address you provide is where ProQuest will send any eligible royalty payments generated by sales of your work. You can use the Carnegie Mellon Architecture office as your mailing address if preferred. If so, use this address:

- Click on "Upload PDF" to upload the final version of your thesis/dissertation. Select "Yes" or "No" to indicate if you have any copyright permission documents to include with your submission.
- If you are unsure if you need to get copyright permission or how to do so, refer to this webpage.- If "Yes," click "Upload File" to upload your copyright permission documents. Click "Save & Continue."
- If "No," click "Save & Continue."
- On the Supplemental Files (optional) page, upload any materials that are part of your thesis/dissertation, such as audio, video, data, spreadsheets, etc.
- Click "Upload File" to upload supplemental files. Click "Save & Continue."
- If you are not uploading supplemental files, click "Save & Continue."
- On the Notes to Administrator (optional) page, enter any notes you have for the Carnegie Mellon Architecture administrator who will review your submission. This is not required and your notes are not made public. Click "Save & Continue."
- Review the information on the Register U.S. Copyright page. Select "Yes" or "No" to indicate if you have registered your published thesis/dissertation, or an earlier version of the manuscript, with the U.S. Copyright Office.
- If "Yes," click "Save & Continue."
- If "No," select whether you want to file for copyright by clicking "No" or "Yes."
- If "No," click "Save & Continue."
- If "Yes," check the box to indicate that you will pay a $75 fee to have a copyright filed with the U.S. Copyright Office on your behalf, you are the sole author of your thesis/dissertation, and you have no co-authors or co-claimants of your thesis/dissertation. Then click "Save & Continue."
- Enter the number of hardcover and/or softcover copies of your thesis/dissertation that you would like to order (optional). Leave the number of copies at 0 if you do not want to order any copies.
- If you want to order copies of your thesis/dissertation, enter the amount(s) and then click "Continue with pre-order." Enter your shipping information. Click "Continue." On the Order Summary page, click "Continue." Enter your billing information. Click "Continue."
- If you do not want to order copies of your thesis/dissertation, click "Decline pre-order." A popup box will appear. Click "Decline pre-order."
- Review your ETD summary. If you have pre-ordered copies or selected paid services like filing for copyright, you will be prompted to enter your payment information in the following steps. Once everything looks correct, click "Submit Dissertation/Thesis."
- If your submission is successful, you will see "Success!" on the Submitted page. This means your submission has been sent to the Carnegie Mellon Architecture administrator for review. A submission confirmation and progress updates will be sent to the email address you provided.
Next Steps
After you submit your thesis/dissertation to ProQuest, your submission completes a series of processes that take about 2-4 weeks. This can take longer during high-volume periods. Once approved, your thesis/dissertation will be automatically published to Carnegie Mellon's institutional repository (KiltHub), where it will be freely available online. If you chose to delay the release of your work, only your citation and abstract will be published immediately. The full text will be published on the date you selected.
