This studio focuses on urban housing and medium-density development, investigating the mid-rise building as an instrument of urban life. Central to the studio is the study of architectural typology. Students analyze the evolution of housing models to understand how the unit and the block have historically negotiated the tension between private domesticity and the collective realm, then deconstruct these precedents to propose variations that address contemporary modes of living. The studio positions housing as social infrastructure, requiring rigorous negotiation between individual autonomy and shared resources. Informed by the Structures and Environmental Systems course streams, students develop a technical understanding of how primary structural elements and building envelopes function as a unified assembly.
