This studio investigates Future Fictions of Florida’s coastal towns, where culture, tourism, ecology, infrastructure, and capital collide. Florida offers a unique condition in which environmental instability, consumerism, and imagemaking are not peripheral, but foundational to town form. Flooding, evacuation, insurance, seasonal inhabitation, roadside attractions, and cultural “weirdness” are not exceptions — they are everyday realities.
Speculation in this studio is not an escape into fantasy, but a method for engaging reality. An aesthetics of realism allows architectural propositions to operate as cultural arguments — advancing present-day conditions into near futures in order to make their consequences visible. Architecture is understood here as a cultural practice that shapes how environments are sensed, governed and inhabited. Through drawing, modeling, mapping, narrative, and mixed media, students construct speculative town-form frameworks and architectural interventions that articulate new relationships between culture, ecology and form. Representation is not secondary. Images do not simply depict objects; they construct worlds. Central to the studio are questions of plausibility, mediation and realism; how architectural representations make futures imaginable, believable and consequential. Pedagogically, the project asks students to treat representation as a primary site of architectural agency. Rather than designing solutions alone, students interrogate and reconstruct the mediating frameworks through which town form, culture, and risk are made sensible.
