This studio’s project is an International Fabric Arts Design Center dedicated to the creation, study, and exhibition of contemporary works in cloth and fiber. This studio’s project is an International Fabric Arts Design Center dedicated to the creation, study, and exhibition of contemporary works in cloth and fiber. The project invites students to consider how process is evidenced in a final work and how the design of the workspace contributes to the process of artistic production.
The techniques of sewing and dyeing are practical, connective, and process driven. Yet, they are also vital to the ongoing expressions of diverse and evolving cultures. As part of understanding the artistic process, the studio will visit the Contemporary Craft gallery and studios in Lawrenceville with the architect, as well as explore other architectural precedents. Moreover, each student has the opportunity to make a work of art in fabric during the semester. No prior experience with fabric or sewing is required, and all materials and equipment are provided.
A fundamental premise of this studio is that designing is a profound experience of growth and learning — a spiral process, doubling back on itself, reassessing and regrouping. By looking deeply into how we find our way through this spiral, we see ourselves in new ways. This semester is a journey in self-discovery that will cultivate inventiveness, judgement, and self-reliance.
